Associate Professor Beverley-Ann Biggs leads a research group with interests in infectious diseases, maternal and child health, immigrant and refugee health, and clinical parasitology. International health activities are based in the Mekong countries and have focused on the introduction, evaluation and expanded use of new and under utilised vaccines, and strengthening capacity for research and control of malaria and parasitic diseases. A new initiative has piloted regular deworming therapy and iron supplements for the control of anaemia in women of reproductive age in Yen Bai Province, Vietnam. Refugee health projects have investigated the burden of undiagnosed infections and nutritional deficiencies in immigrants from Cambodia, Afghanistan, Eastern Mediterranean region, and the Horn of Africa.
